Many students starting university must choose a major (main field of study at university), and parents of these students often give them advice about which major to choose. Some parents tell students to choose the major that most interests the students. Other parents tell students that it is best to choose a major that will lead to a job with a high salary, even if that major may not be the one that most interests the students. Which approach do you believe is better and why?

【Introduction】

Of all the advice that students receive throughout their lives, some of the most significant is about which major to choose in university(交代背景). Some parents encourage their kids to pick a field that interests them, while others implore(恳求) their children to pick a major that offers a high-paying career, regardless of interest(复述题目). I believe that the latter option of the two is a better approach(陈述立场).

【Body】

For starters, the substantial cost of a modern university education demands that students and parents be extremely prudent with the choice of a major. After all, the purpose of university is to prepare students to enter the career world, so it behooves them to pick a lucrative field. As evidenced by the vast number of former students in the USA who are now saddled with an unbearable amount of student debt and little in the way of careers to show for it, choosing a major that provides decent job prospects should be paramount. Telling a student to pick a major that simply interests them runs the risk of them wasting four or more years in their life on a subject that will leave them indebted and struggling to make up for that lost time working menial jobs.

✔saddled with 负担着

【Body】

Furthermore, being interested in a major at the beginning of one’s college career does not necessarily mean that the interest will be maintained as the years progress. This is especially true in the modern era where universities are run like businesses, wherein changing one’s major is a fairly easy process. As a result, students may take a plethora of courses, which may be insufficient to complete any degree, much less one that is needed for decent careers. Or worse, they may not graduate with any degree at all, and thus have nothing to show for the time and money spent on higher education.

【Body】

Admittedly(开始让步), students may perform better in fields which they are interested in. It is much easier to study and contribute to the development of a field that one has a passion for. Also, it is possible that students who demonstrate a love for their major may become exceptional in the area and find high-paying careers in fields which are not traditionally considered to be high-paying. For instance, a student that chooses a major in philosophy, which is often ridiculed as a useless degree, may use their passion and knowledge of the field to become a prolific(多产的) writer and become quite wealthy. However(开始转折), these examples are exceptions rather than the rule, and it is not reasonable to expect such results in most cases.

✔prolific(多产的)

【Conclusion】

In summary, I feel that parents should encourage their children to study majors in university which are tied to lucrative careers(复述立场). In this way, their futures are secured through achieving financial stability. If worst comes to worst, and students despise the path they have been led down, they will at least have the financial freedom to pursue their passions in their free time. This is a more desirable alternative to working an interesting job and barely scraping by.

scraping by 糊口
